Learning at Home: V-day Activities

I wanted to show you some more of our activities from this past Valentine's Day...and maybe it will give you some ideas for your next V-day! Besides making cookies and making this craft together, we also did two other activities.

Heart Hopskotch

You know...just like regular hopskotch, but with hearts instead of squares. I kept it pretty simple and just did a straight line of hearts. Every time Adoration would get to the end, I would say "I love you!!!"

Ages: 18+ (younger if they have the gross motor skills)
Learning: Gross Motor Skills
Supplies: Chalk

Little Kisses

Adoration just loves to give kisses, and she also likes to watch me put on makeup. She will pretend to put on makeup too when I'm getting ready. So I combined the two and came up with this activity! I mean...I have Adoration footprints, and little Adoration hand prints, but what about little Adoration LIP prints??? I mean just so, so cute.

Ages: Whenever they are old enough to know how to kiss!
Learning: Affection/ just for fun!

Supplies: Lipstick, handheld mirror, card stock (I used paper cause I was out of card stock, but card stock would work better.)

I put Adoration in her high chair for this and sat beside. I let her watch me put on lipstick and asked her if she wanted some. She was pretty excited about this! I put the lipstick on her little lips, while holding the mirror up, so she could see the process. She was oohing and ahhing and making eyes at herself. I then said, "Give the paper kisses!" and I demonstrated it for her. She will kiss anything and everything so next thing I knew, she was covering the paper with her little kisses. She seemed to think it was really fun that she could see her "kisses." After the lipstick dried, I painted over the "kisses" with modge podge to save it.

Unfortunately, my camera battery was dead so I didn't get the cute pictures of Adoration actually doing this activity. But here is the final product in it's place of honor on the fridge, courtesy of my iphone.

Messy is fun.

We made some cookies for Valentine's Day. I let Adoration get in on the fun and she "helped" me roll out the door and cut out the cookies. At some point she sneaked a piece of dough and kept saying, "mhmm! mhmm!" And watching her roll that rolling pin so seriously just killed me! She was concentrating so hard.
Things got pretty messy but if you ever read my Learning at Home posts, you would know I am not afraid of mess. Usually the reward of having my little engaged in an activity far outweighs the hassle of cleaning up. A childhood without some healthy mess just seems a little sad to me!

Hmm...I should maybe get her an apron.

DIY: A Love Banner

For Valentine's Day,  I wanted to give my hubbie a card that was made by both me and my daughter, Adoration. I also wanted it to be a little something different than a paper card. So we made a fabric banner card! This one was for Valentine's Day, but you could do this for any occasion or holiday.

Step one: Make a potato stamp.
I needed a heart stamp and we had some potatoes already in the house. so I made a stamp out of potato! It was a good choice cause A. we already had it in the house and B. it was perfect for my daughter's little hands to handle.
1: Cut a small potato in half
2: draw a heart (or whatever shape you choose) on the potato with a pen. Cut out around it.

Step two: Stamp away!
I just used plain ol' acrylic paint and a scrap of fabric. Burlap would be great fabric for this. I helped guide my daughter as she stamped.

Step three: If you choose, write a personal message on the banner. I used a sharpie.
Using a hot glue gun, glue the sticks on the top and bottom of the banner.

Step four: Tie a loop of yarn onto the top stick for hanging purposes.
Roll the banner inward from the top and bottom until it meets in the middle, like a scroll.
Tie a bow around the middle and give it to someone you love!

A little cuteness and a quick hello!

I was looking through some old pictures and found these of Adoration. I have three things to say about these pictures:
                                                              1: OMG!!!
2: she had a mohawk. It was so awesome
3: When did she stop being a squishy face baby?

Just thought I would share the cuteness. In other news, hubbie has been sick. I need him to get better pronto because (A.) I love him and hate seeing him not feel well and (B.) It's nice to have his daddy help around here. for realz.

And....Tuesday is Valentine's Day!  I know some people are V-day haters. I am not one of those people. I love Valentine's day, always have, even when I didn't have a "significant" other. I always had people that loved me and people that I loved, plus it's an excuse to eat yummy desserts you wouldn't ordinarily eat! You just can't hate on that. I have some little projects planned for Adoration and of course, decorating cookies is in the plans. Hopefully I will get up a learning at home/DIY post up of a project I have scheming.

I also realize I haven't written very many "personal" posts in a long while. I've been writing one in my head over and over again. It's about time I wrote it down for real. So stay tuned.

And my sweet friend Bekah sent out some love to Altogether Beautiful. She is awesome and it was awesome of her to give a shout out. So to my new followers who found me through Bekah, welcome and much love! I hope to get to know you more and I hope you enjoy my little blog.

Learning at Home: A Counting Toy

     Age: 18mo+

     Supplies: small canvas,
sharpies or markers in five different colors
               something circular to trace

I wanted to make Adoration a visual tool (that she could play with) to encourage her counting and number learning.

All I did was trace the right amount of circles for each corresponding number onto a canvas. I made it on a canvas so it could be reused. (This could be really fun wall art too. Mine is kinda sloppy because it was made quickly but you could make it really pretty!) Adoration plays with it by placing small little objects in the circles. She really likes playing with beach stones, so we usually use those. She is a little too young to play with it the "right" way, which would be doing it in order. She places her stones in the circles in no order and and haphazardly but regardless, it is still a visual counting encouragement for her! When I play with her, I help guide her and we count as we go. She knows how to count to "tree" now!

January Photo-a-day

So I did that January Phota-a-day challenge that was on instagram...but I have a confession, I didn't finish. I mean January has like sooo many days. I got bored with it about half way through, but I was like, "no! I started this, I will finish it!" But then we went out of town for a weekend and I got behind...and that was that. So much for finishing. I did manage to make it through day 22. Here are the results.

Yay! Well that was fun....for about 7 days.
